The end result of the Civil War was that it was afterwards written into law that no state can leave the Union; the South was virtually destroyed; the vast majority of slaves were freed (those who were in the Confederate states); afterwards blacks were awarded citizenship; the South became industrialized after the war with the arrival of the Yankee carpetbaggers; and the old antibellum, plantation based South was essentially wiped off the map. The federal government now ranked supreme, and put an end to the idea of secession. The federal government could now override southern legislation. It provided an opportunity for the grown of the transcontinental railroad. This united most of the country. To name a few.

Consequences of the Civil WarThere were numerous consequences of the Civil War. The union was upheld and the states' rights theories of John C. Calhoun were settled in favor of the fact that the United States was not a federation of states but a nation, one and indivisible. The political dominance of the South was destroyed as a result of the war. Northeastern industrial and financial interests came to influence the direction of the nation and the economy. The west was developed after the war on the basis of some of the legislation passed by Congress during the war. Congress subsidized the building of the transcontinental railroads. Railroad companies received vast acreage in the west which they later sold to farmers and ranchers populating the West. The Republican Congress also enacted higher tariffs which increased taxes on imported goods. The income tax was used during the war, later to become a permanent part of the Constitution. The debt of the government increased. Perhaps the most obvious consequence of the Civil War was the end of slavery. While the slaves were now freemen, the Civil War would also usher in the period of Reconstruction which would have a divisive and lasting effect on the nation as a whole.

The Civil War began because the Southern States wanted to become a separate nation from the Northern states because of different views of slavery. The Civil War prevented the Southern states from becoming their own country, and ultimately ended slavery.

Many outcomes, but most notably the total abolition of slavery and the granting of U.S. Citizenship to the freed slaves as codified and in the 13th and 14th Amendments to the U.S. Constitution.

Also, the attempt to secede from Union by the 11 Confederate states was put down with military force and there was a military occupation of those states from 1865 until 1877 (known as Reconstruction).

Northern armies crushed, after four long years of war, the Confederacy's ability to field and supply the large armies that would have been needed to carry on the rebellion against the North. The Southern states basically surrendered when Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered what was left of the Army of Northern Virginia. Despite efforts by Confederate president Jefferson Davis, the war was over after four years. And, tragically as the war ended, Lincoln was assassinated. This brought on a horrible reconstruction era and disunity within the USA.
