During the revolution she was married to Alexandre, vicomte de Beauharnais who was arrested in 1794 because he was suspected of supporting the aristocracy. He was guillotined for it and Josephine was imprisoned. 5 days after her husband was murdered, she was released because Maximilien Robespierre was guillotined and the reign of terror had come to an end. She met Napoleon 1 year later.

Power and control went from the man on the street to the smooth talking political wags and wonks who were often lawyers that were considered to be both bright and capable. These bright young men were glad to take on the awesome responsibility and they in turn became the Jacobin defenders of the French Revolution and the creators of the Reign of Terror.
Because he believed that once the revolutionary process would come to a halt, the 'forces of revisionism' would again take over and return society to a capitalist state.
