At Club Nintendo you earn stars for purchasing products and upgrades. These stars can then be exchanged for prizes. Some examples of prizes are stationery, Nintendo points cards, accessories and games.
The elite status rewards have not been announced for 2011 yet.
The 2012 Club Nintendo Gold and Platinum rewards will not be announced until the beginning of July.

Club Nintendo's coins (called stars outside of the Americas) are a reward points system. They can be redeemed for Club Nintendo-exclusive rewards.
They are but you have to have at least 600 club Nintendo coins to get a platinum prize. So, yes they are free but you have to buy games or a Nintendo dsi to get some coins.

Go to the DSI SHop channel and go to options and click link club Nintendo account. Enter you email and password you use and done.
Each Pokemon platinum product code for Club Nintendo is different. If one is lost or ruined, one needs to buy another copy of the game for a new registration code.
Each year the special gift is different. You will get the gold status reward if you reach gold, or you will get the platinum status reward and the gold status reward if you reach platinum. Last Club Nintendo year (2011), the gold prize was a nintendo calendar, whereas the platinum prize was a model of the mario characters
