Women were responsible for operating a household by cooking, gardening, washing, cleaning, weaving, and sewing. Women also had to take care of their children at times they had help from other mothers. As for rights women couldn't own property or land.
Everything other than fighting in the Army, construction, spiritual leadership, legal and financial issues. Women helped farm, build their home, raise children, doctor, preach, fight, and work, but mainly the men fought, farmed, worked for money, pastored a church, bought and sold things, and dealt with the courts. Women couldn't vote or become lawyers and couldn't pastor a church. The roles were distinct and people knew their roles. The roles came from tradition, functional common sense, and The Bible. Today, roles are blurred by political movements to challenge tradition, which has positive and negative effects. The negative effect is that men don't know what their role is anymore and are taught by society to be meek and women are taught to be strong. Just look at current TV advertising and you'll see what politically motivated Propaganda is like. The positives of today are that women can and should be able to vote, buy and sell things, and do what men do if they wish. Women are stronger than we give credit for and every bit as intelligent as men. However, holding to distinct roles in certain facets of life is advantageous and can only be decided individually; what feels right to each person. If it feels wrong, perhaps it is. Society can't make that decision.
