john Locke, in his Two Treatises of Government, sought to refute (go against) the doctrine of the divine and absolute right of the monarch. He also wanted a society based on freedom and equal laws and rights entitled to all citizens. He, like many philosophers of his time, wanted the formation of a French nation state.
