Franklin believed that government of the few was open to tyranny and corruption. In order to protect the rights of the colonists (Englishmen), Franklin accepted the system we know as representative democracy. He recognized the importance of protecting the individual's rights in the political process and the purpose of the state (government) to protect the natural rights (inalienable) of all citizens. He was tolerant of other views, political, social, and religious.
