In religion "rites of passage" usually refers to one's upward movement through the ranks and the further one moves the more knowledge is allowed to have eg Australian Aborigines take young boys at the age of puberty to secret sacred sites where they are circumcised and are given further knowledge about their tribe's sacred beliefs eg the "dreamtime" which is how the aborigines explain the origin of all things. I believe this happens with many ancient cultures. Perhaps another example is with Christians whereby young boys and men go through seven stages leading to the priesthood - at each they are given more authority over the general body of their church.
