He was a very popular young General, who re-organised the Union army after its defeat at Bull Run and quickly restored morale by regularly visiting every unit and giving pep-talks.

When it came to actual campaigning, he turned out to be all talk, no action, as you can tell from his letters to Lincoln from the front line.

When Lincoln fired him, he feuded with him, and eventually stood against him in the 1864 election. He looked like winning this election, until some last-minute Union victories restored Lincoln's popularity.

General George B. McClellan was a key figure in the Union army until his dismissal by US President Lincoln in 1862. McClellan's ideas were brilliant, however, he failed to execute many of them. One key item of significance was the fact that he reorganized the Army of the Potomac into a viable army of great potential. His Peninsula plan to capture Richmond failed due to his reluctance to take advantage of the large number of troops he was in command of in that campaign.

Also, after he resigned from his position in the US Army, he ran against President Lincoln in the 1864 US presidential election. He lost, however, his roles in the military and in politics were remarkable.
