Before Mexico's independence, most positions in power were held by Peninsulares, or Spanish-born people. Criolloswere descendants of Spanish people born in the Americas, and were highly disgruntled with the status quo.

Criollos saw the occupation of Spain by France during the Peninsular Wars (1807 - 1814) as an opportunity to revolt against Spanish rule and become the new masters of the New Spain. They first conspired and then revolted against Spanish colonial forces from the early hours of September 16, 1810.
