The Soviets played a major role in the second world war, particularly toward the end of the conflict. The Russo-German Non-Aggression Pact, a shaky alliance between Stalin and Hitler, who were of opposite ideologies and aimed to expands their spheres of influence, was eventually violated by Hitler. This probed a valid excuse for Stalin and the USSR to push back the German troops and gain control of areas "liberated" from Nazi control. Without the participation of the Soviet Union the second world war may not have been won by the Allies.

The Soviets played a pivotal role in the war's outcome. If they had not held the Germans in check in 1941 an allied victory would have taken a lot

longer. Germany's first major defeats were at Kursk and Stalingrad. Allied

military deaths in all of WW2 were about 14 million and the Soviets had a

death toll of about 10.5 million and about 15 million civilian deaths.

Soviet fought on both sides, according to imperial interests.

"Tore the heart out of the Germans", according to Winston Churchill. The Soviet Union fought back the German invasion of 1941 at a huge price; they lost more soldiers and civilians than any other nation in the war, with Stalingrad as the pivotal battle area. Thus they took brutal revenge in Germany at the end of the war, leading German families to commit suicide rather than facing the Red Army. They are attributed with the conquest of Berlin leading to the end of the Third Reich.

A long-lasting effect was that the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact gave Soviet right to take most of eastern Europe as their "lebensraum" and buffer zone, so they fought Finland conquering territory, invaded Poland, the Baltic countries, and others, either consolidating them into the Soviet Union, or including them in Stalin's empire, as puppet states (in the Warsaw treaty) placing sympathising people in leadership. He was the only surviving leader of from the Jalta conference and could thus enforce his will amongst the allies. In Soviet's view, the "people's revolution" spread through Europe. Also in Asia, Stalinist regimes came into power. Immediately after the war, a long conflict surged, "the cold war", beginning with Soviet using their occupation zone in Germany to cut off the zones of the other allies in Berlin (blockade).

Until 1941 when being an ally of Germany, they had some cooperation, like instruction on concentration camps from Stalin's experience. Germany received lots of resources, using the Trans-Siberian railway.

Soviet contributed with new tank technology, like the T-34. Using sloped armour, the effective protection became better with the same weight, as well as introducing a deflection effect. This has been used as a standard since that.
