The play is based on the theme that criminals are not born but circumstances turn a person into a criminal. The convict stole money because his wife was sick and dying. The play also highlights the theme of compassion which can reform even a hard earned criminal. The convict was treated like an animal in the prison but the benevolence of the Bishop turned the beast back into a man. Therefore, it is love and compassion that can reform a person, not violence.
