In Hinduism the people were divided in four groups according to the occupation they followed - The Brahmins - who attained and disseminated knowledge, The 'Kshtriyas' or warriors who defended, The 'Vaisyas' who traded and the 'Shudras' - who performed routine works like farming and other laborious jobs. These four categories were called 'Varna'.
