The baroque style in architecture and music was encouraged by the Catholic Church in response to the protestant revolt. While the protestants wanted to simplify and make everything cerebral, while the Church encouraged the use of art and music to appeal to all the senses of men. Catholic Church, at the time of the Council of Trent, in response to the Protestant Reformation, decided that the arts should communicate religious themes in direct and emotional involvement, which resulted in what we know know as the Baroque period, roughly from 1600 to 1720 when the Rococo style took over in popularity.

Why did baroque period people want fancy stuff?

It was the style back in the Baroque period. There were not many dynamics, and they tend to leave out ornaments for the person who will play the piece to make them up as they go. It could get very dramatic, especially on a violin or another string instrument. They didn't have a piano that could change dynamics whenever they wanted.

What part does the Roman Catholic Church play in all this?

Actually, there is no Roman Catholic Church. It's just Catholic, not Roman Catholic. Roman is an epithet first commonly used in England after the protestant revolt to describe the Catholic Church. It is never used by the official Catholic Church..That being said, the answer to your question is the Catholic Church's role in "all of this" is everything. God spoke and created the world (read Genesis 1:3) and His Word is Our Blessed Lord, Jesus Christ (read John 1:1-3). Now, the Catholic Church IS Jesus Christ, (read Acts 9:1-5, 1 Cor 12:12-14)..So the short answer to your question is that the Catholic Church's role is EVERYTHING, it is the only meaning that anyone's life in this world has, and without the Catholic Church - which is the Word of God: Jesus Christ's mystical Body - then nothing has any meaning.
