The plain and simple to this question is that Jehovah's Witnesses use the Bible, any translation of it to be exact. While many Jehovah's Witnesses do prefer the New World Translation of The Holy Scriptures they are ready and willing to use ANY translation of the Bible.

In fact as a worldwide organization, many of Jehovah's Witnesses do not have the New World Translation available in their language and hence have no choice but to use another translation. This poses no problem for Jehovah's Witnesses since most Bibles are basically the same.

Contrary to what has been stated in other s Jehovah's Witnesses have not changed the New World Translation to fit their theology. They have simply searched for the most accurate understanding of the original texts. At times what they have found has disagreed with the theology and traditions of other religions while agreeing with what many other religions, theologians and archeologists have found.

They seem to take this responsibility pretty seriously from what I have seen and have even made many corrections in understandings of the scriptures when necessary, even if it means having a little egg on their face according to some.

The Jehovah's Witnesses use a bible which is altered according to their theology. It is called the New World Translation however it is not a translation in the places where they have altered it to agree with their theology. Thus it is not the Bible referred to by Christians when they speak of the Bible. I am not saying this as a personal attack of any kind but as a simple matter of fact.

The foreward reads this way: "It is a very responsible thing to translate the Holy Scriptures from their original languages of Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek into mdern speech. Translating the Holy Scriptures means rendering into another language the thoughts and sayings of Jehovah God, the heavenly Author of this sacred library of sixty-six books that holy men of long ago were inspired to write down for our benefit. The translators of this work, who fear and love the Divine Author of the Holy Scriptures, feel toward Him a special responsibility to transmit his thoughts and declarations as accurately as possible. "It was with such a sense of solemn responsiblity that over the course of many years this committee of dedicated men have produced the New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures. The entire work was originally released in six voumes, from 1950 to 1960. From the start it was the desire of the translators to have all these voumes brought together into one book, inasmuch as the Holy Scriptures are in actuality one book by the One author. While the original volumes contained marginal references and footnotes, the revised one-voume edition, released in 1961, contained neither footnotes nore marginal references. A second revision was realeased in 1970, and a third revision with footnotes follwed in 1971. In 1969 the committe released the Kingdom Interlinear Translation of the Greek Scriptures, which presented under the Greek text published in 1881 by Westcott and Hort a literal word-for-word translation into English. "This new edition is not just a refinement of the translated text beyond its already previous revisions, but it has been expanded to inclued a complete updating and revision of the marginal (cross) references taht were initially presened in English, from 1950 to 1960. "This 1984 revision has been released by us to the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania for printing, translation into other leading languages and distribution. We thus make it available with a deep sense of gratitude to the Divine Author of the Holy Scriptures, who has so privilaged us and in whose spirit we have trusted in producing this revision. I am an Adventist and I was given a New World Translation Bible for Christmas a few years ago. As I was doing Bible studies with my Pastor, we would ALWAYS come across mis-translations in this version of the Bible. It does not always coincide with the original Greek text as mentioned above in a different . I do like this version only because its easy to read.

: I am a Christian who was converted from Mormonism when 20 years old. So I have already had to abandon one set of beliefs, which I was taught were truth in order to accept what is genuine truth. The truth is not 'out there somewhere' it is plainly in front of us but we have to be willing to do the research and then have the honest, intellectual integrity to accept the truth. The Mormons had taught me that the Bible could not be trusted and had been corrupted, that is why the Book of Mormon superseded it but when I did the research I found that the Bible was a true document that had been meticulously transcribed and miraculously preserved. The dead sea scrolls pre-date Christ but show a 99.9% accuracy in preservation of old testament writings. There are over 5000 manuscripts and portions of manuscripts of the New Testament that are dated to within 50-150 years of their actual beginning. This is astounding when compared to any other ancient literature such as the Iliad and Odyssey, writings of Plato, Socrates etc. regarding the JW New World Translation, it is translated from an obscure greek translation known as the Emphatic Diaglott, a two language polyglot translation, of the New Testament by Benjamin Wilson, first published in 1864. Benjamin Wilson was an oddity in his time who operated in fringe church's that were outside of mainstream Christian beliefs. His is the only greek translation which upholds the main JW doctrines of Jesus not being GOD. Charles Taze Russell purchased the copyright to the emphatic Diaglott in 1900and began publishing it through the Watchtower Society. It is an unreliable, corrupt translation that is being used by an unscrupulous organization to deceive and mislead its trusting members. Thank goodness for Google search engines.... Look it up yourself.

And by research I mean look everywhere including talking to and getting to know some of Jehovah's Witnesses for yourself. We do prefer the NWT primarily for study purposes, as it is a modern language Bible that restores God's name Jehovah to it's rightful places in the scriptures. In the oldest manuscripts and scolls that are still in existence today, that name is found over 7000 times, more than any other name, but most translations have removed the name of God, either partialy or entirely from their translations.

We also make use of other translations such as the King James, Bible in Living English, American Standard Version, etc. Referencing other translations often gives a more complete understanding to a particular Bible passage. For example, 1 Corinthians 10:25, in the Origional King James Version speaks of "whatever is sold in the shambles." If a person did not reference other translations, he may not realize that a "shambles" in old English referred to a meat market. Therefore, he would never get the full sence of what was being said.

When studying with individuals who are not Jehovah's Witnesses, we use whatever translation they prefer. For this reason, Jehovah's Witnesses who want to be effective teachers of the Bible need to be very familiar with all different translations of the Bible. In my personal collection, I have several translations, including a Greek interlinear.

Jehovah's Witnesses take our Bible study very seriously, in fact we view it as our lifeline. The Bible is our sacred text.

In theory, God's word, The Holy Bible is the only book that is actually viewed as 'holy' by Witnesses.

However, Jehovah's Witnesses will study the New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures (NWT) but they also believe and teach that it is not possible for a person to reach the proper understanding without the help of supplementary literature provided by their 'spirit-directed organization'. This includes twice-monthly Watchtowers and whatever the latest of a long line of study aids they have produced is. A favorite study aid - especially used in their door-to-door ministry - is "Reasoning from the Scriptures" (1985, 1989)
