Many of the saints dropped from the calendar probably did exist but their lives are based on many myths and legends and little factual information has survived. They have not been 'de-sainted' and are still considered to be saints but have been removed from the calendar. Here are a few examples:
Saint Valentine of Rome
Saint Ursula
Saint Christopher
Saint Barbara of Nicomedia (cult supressed in 1969)
Saint Dorothy (cult supressed in 1969)
Saint Philomena was never recogized formally as a saint and her cult was only permitted in Mungano, Italy, where her relics are held.

Saint Olivia never existed except in a fictional story circulating in the Church that was mistaken for a biography.

Saint Catherine of Alexandria was also removed from the calendar at this time but was returned by Pope John Paul II in 2002 when her diary was found in Ethiopia verifying her life.

There were a number of other lesser known saints also dropped from the calendar in the 1960s.

When did Saint Vitus become a saint?

The names of Saints Vitus, Modestus and Crescentia were added in the eleventh century to the Roman Calendar, so that from then on all three names were celebrated together until 1969, when their feast was removed from the calendar of feasts proposed for celebration throughout the Roman Rite. Saint Vitus is still recognized as a saint of the Roman Catholic Church, being inscribed in the Roman Martyrology under June 15, and Mass may be celebrated in his honor on that day wherever the Roman Rite is celebrated, while the Saints Modestus and Crescentia who are associated with Saint Vitus in legend have been omitted, because they appear to be merely fictitious personages. However, some traditionalist Catholics continue to observe pre-1970 versions of the General Roman Calendar.
