"Between Scylla and Charybdis" is the ancient equivalent of "between a rock and a hard place."
The saying "between a rock and a hard place" originated from the Greek mythological episode of Scylla and Charybdis. It refers to being stuck between two equally difficult or dangerous situations with no clear way to escape.
The saying "A person without a past has no future" is attributed to American author Robert Goddard. This quote emphasizes the importance of understanding and learning from one's past experiences in order to shape one's future.
Most scientists believe that the chicken came first, as a result of genetic mutations occurring in an egg laid by a bird that was not quite a chicken. This led to the evolution of the modern chicken species.
The egg came first. The first chicken would have hatched from an egg laid by a bird that was not quite a chicken yet, due to gradual changes over time in its genes.
Nationhood came first in the Philippines, with the formation of a common identity and consciousness among its people. Statehood came later, with the establishment of a formal political entity recognized by other nations.
Jose Rizal said "The youth is the hope of the Fatherland" in his letter "To the Filipino Youth" that was written on July 15, 1879, addressed to the Filipino people. Rizal wrote the letter while he was studying in Madrid, Spain.
Charybdis was a nymph before turning into what she was. For some reason she did something horrendous and was turned into a whirlpool. She and her sister were in this business Scylla was also a nymph but got punished and became a headed monster. But they got so frustrated that whenever a ship came you had no where to go because you would either get eaten by Scylla of drown by Charybdis. The only to that made it through them was Odysseus and i think Jason.
Scylla grew up a beautiful maiden nymph, the daughter of Phorcys and Ceto. One day while she walked along the water's edge a man turned sea-god, Glaucus, spotted her. He lusted after her, but, in she did not return that love. A jealous Circe, who was in love with Glaucus herself, got pissed and used herbs to magically poison the water and transform poor Scylla. She was human to the waist, but below that were biting snapping dogs. She had become a monster. She sat on the Italian side of the straits of Messina gobbling up anything that came within her reach. In The Odyssey, Odysseus manages to avoid Charybdis (see above), but loses six men to Scylla. Scylla probably explained a partially submerged rock that ships foundered on. There is also a human named Scylla, in case you came here by mistake. Scylla means "She who rends". The painting is of Scylla and Circe, by John Melhuish Strudwick.
In Homer's "The Odyssey," the Sirens are dangerous mythological creatures who lure sailors to their deaths with their enchanting voices. To protect his crew from this temptation, Odysseus has his men plug their ears with beeswax and tie him to the ship's mast so he can hear the Sirens' song without being lured in. This demonstrates Odysseus's cleverness and ability to navigate dangerous situations.
It is said Scylla ate thousands of men as they passed by or tried to fight her. In particular, 6 of Odysseus' men were eaten as they came home from the Siege of Troy.
