Where does the last name Miller come from?
Many European names came from a person's profession. They started as a way of distinguishing different people with the same given name - e.g. John the fisherman as opposed to John the barber, and eventually these morphed into family names that lost their connection to a person's profession. John the fisherman became John Fisher, John the barrel-maker (cooper) became John Cooper, and so on. So, Millers were probably at one point involved in grain milling!
