Sometimes a student will say:"I am seeking knowledge for the sake of knowledge", implying that he is not after a diploma or a degree or something else of that sort. However, what he is doing is also wrong.
All science is driven by the interest of scientists in scientific questions. Perhaps you are thinking about whether the scientific question has a practical application or not. If the scientist is interested in a question without a practical application, that's called "pure science". But the guy trying to find out if there is a more flexible plastic that Barbie dolls could be made from is still interested in a scientific question.
basic science and physics
Both astrophysics & cosmology seek to answer questions about the universe for the sake for gaining knowledge
I will say physics cause it incorporates quantum mechanics and all other "POS"
applied science
Pure science
Astrophysics
The science that seeks to answer questions about the universe for the sake of gaining knowledge is called pure or fundamental science, also known as basic or theoretical science. This type of science is driven by curiosity and aims to uncover the fundamental principles and laws that govern the universe without a specific practical application or immediate use in mind.
Basic science.
I'd use the word "Science"
Everything General Knowledge Knowledge of the UNiverse and how we relate to the UNiverse How to treat illnesses What causes illnesses What everything is made of what could be going to happen etc. The list is infinite

It's called Basic Science, and it's what Applied Science depends on.
