A very large organic compound made up of chains of smaller molecules is a polymer.
The more initiator molecules there are, the more chains get started. Since the chains compete for monomers, if there are 5 times as many chains obviously they will be shorter on average.
The simplest organic molecules are hydrocarbon chains. methane CH4, ethane H3C-CH3, Propane H3C-CH2-CH3, etc....

He didn't discover it, but in 1777 Antoine Lavoisier helped convince the scientific community that sulfur was an element, not a compound (in fact it is both, consisting of cyclic chains of S atoms).
Chains of amino acids are referred to as polypeptides. Proteins are created from one or more of these polypeptide molecules.

Maltose.
They can be chains, rings, or branched structures.
