... I'm quite sure you meant Albert Einstein... he became US citizen in 1940, was born in Germany 1879... He had to leave Germany as a Jew as Hitler was going to lead the country at that time. Albert Einstein studied at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH), Switzerland... then prepared a short résumé of his discoveries to get access at the University of Berne (still Switzerland) - he then got the Nobel Prize for this very résumé... if I'm not wrong. But I'm quite sure he never really was Swiss citizen... he had residence permission and became some citizen of honor of Berne or something... Vic
1901 Einstein wanted to avoid military service in Germany, therefore he gave up his German citizenship. He then moved to Switzerland where he did his pre-university and university diplomas. In 1901 he landed his first job with the Swiss Patent Office in Berne. In order to work at a Swiss government office, he had to be a Swiss citizen. He held his Swiss citizenship for the rest of his life.
Born to a Jewish family in Germany, he grew up in Munich, Germany, and in 1894 he moved to Aarau, Switzerland. He attended a technical school in Zürich (graduating in 1900) and during this period renounced his German citizenship; stateless for some years, he became a Swiss citizen in 1901. When Hitler came to power, Einstein moved to Princeton, N.J. He became a U.S. citizen in 1940, but retained his Swiss citizenship.
