It might be a camouflage by contrast mechanism wherein the predator is focused on the white tail so much that the rabbit can just sit down to hide the white tail and is no longer visible to predator. I have noticed that my cocker spaniels, and this is quite likely true for other predators too, are excellent at detecting motion but no good at picking out a rabbit that is sitting motionless, barring of course the scent. But then the wily rabbit has a few tricks for that too.
