Its guarenteed to be the Crankshaft Position Sensor, located in most vehicles at the top of the bellhousing, you do not have to remove the transmission. When the sensor goes partially, your vehicle will randomly turn off while driving, like someone flipping a switch off, when it goes out completely, your engine with crank all day long but not start... If the sensor isn't gone all the way, it will idle all day, reving the engine, etc... But as soon as you take off down the road it will just shut off. Usually costs about $40.00 - $60.00 and takes maybe 6 minutes to swap out.
This is a VERY common problem with jeeps, another side effect is whenever the sensor is on it's way out, after it shuts off while you are driving, the Jeep wont start again for a few minutes, then after a few minutes it will fire right up and idle all day long if you wanted it to.
Hope this helps. That's a friggen important sensor, try unplugging it while your engine is idleing, it will turn her right off and she wont start till you plug it back in.
A 1998 Jeep grand Cherokee's rear brakes make lock up and make a horrible noise while driving if there is problems with the rear differential. The pinion may of locked up. A mechanic will be able to help you fix the problem.
Check the sparkplug wires and make sure the sparkplus are tight
Bad case scenario: That would be possible transmission slipping. Good case scenario: One of Two Speed sensors.
