Protists are eukaryotes. They are cells with a nucleus. Bacteria and archea are generally much smaller than nucleated cells and they have no nucleus. The mitochondria and chloroplasts in nucleated cells are about the size of bacteria and apppear to be descendants of bacteria that lived symbiotically within cells that evolved into cells with a nucleus.
