Plus, the cavity is big enough to hold all the organs (heart, lungs, major arteries) and allow the lungs to expand. The lungs could not expand in any other place (imagine if lungs were in your toes-- ouch!). And, the abdomen is already full, with digestive organs (primarily intestines) and reproductive organs (primarily in females).
