Some were fishermen, other built fishing boats and sailing ships. Some were foresters who provided the lumber to build those ships. Some made salt so that the fish could be preserved for shipment to market. Some made Barrel staves and Barrels to hold the salted fish for export. Smiths made Barrel hoops to hold the Barrels together during shipment. Some were farmers who provided the food to feed the foresters and fishermen. Some operated grist mills to grind the farmers grain so that it could be turned to flour. Some carved stone to make grindstones for the grist mills.

That would probably be dictated by the individuals role. If as an indentured servant the choices would be limited to what goods he already had, what he could afford to buy or trade for, or what he could steal before the ship departed. If it was as an appointed Governor it might include the essentials to create a grist mill, a saw mill, abundant trade goods, farming and construction tools, skilled craftsmen, a minor but well armed security force, qualified medical personnel, a complete blacksmith shop, emergency food stores, seed grains and plantings, livestock, a skilled poacher or two, a religious leader, and the list would go on for pages.
