The purpose of the shielding gas is not just shielding the weld pool but offer arc stability with an adequate ionization potential. The heat and electrical conducctivity of the gas at the arc temperature are a huge factor as well.

Once you catch a breeze of wind while welding using a shielding gas which makes the gas ineffective the weld will have porosity in it and could fail.
