This was the British cruise liner RMS 'Lusitania' during WW1. On the 7th May 1915, she was torpedoed by a German submarine off the Old Head of Kinsale in Western Ireland, with the loss of 1,198 of her passenger and crew, 128 of whom were Americans. The event shocked and stunned the whole world, even Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany, who thenceforth issued an order that no civilian shipping was to be attacked by the German Navy. However, the event led to the United States eventually being brought in to WW1 just under two years later, and also to the US increasing financial support for the Allies. The submarine's captain claimed that he sank the liner because he suspected that it was carrying secret supplies of US ammunition for the Allies, and there has been some evidence to support his claim, in that quantities of bullets and shell cases have been found littered around the wreck site.
The ship carried 120 Americans and its name was the Lusitania.
In 1915, the British ocean liner Lusitania was torpedoed by a German u-boat (submarine) and sunk because the central powers believed the ship was being utilized to transport contraband (war materials) to the United Kingdom.
The Germans sunk several ships while Wilson was President, but the most momentous sinking so far as the US was concerned was the sinking of the passenger ship, The Lusitania by German U-boats on May 7, 1915, killing 1198.
This question is somewhat vague in it's reference. U boats sank many ships. Possibly "the ship" was the Lusitania, a passenger liner. It was sunk on May 7th 1915 off the coast of Ireland. The Germans justified this horrible act by their belief that the ship was also carrying war munitions to Britain, which has been verified in more recent years. The ship had a number of Americans on board which strengthened the argument that the U.S. should enter the war, which it did on April 6, 1917.

One of the main reasons the US entered World War I on the side of the allies was because the Germans had sunk the Lusitania, a passenger ship containing many Americans.

Germany sank the Lusitania and sank it because of the fact it was a British ship and Germany was at war with Britain, it was a coincidence that Americans were on it and not the only ship with Americans that the Germany sunk.
The Americans were had the chance to enter the war, but didn't because they didn't want to get involved. Believe it or not, at one time the Americans wanted nothing to do with war. The Lusitania was a cargo ship holding cargo bound for America. The Germans had sunk the American ship holding a large amount of cargo that the Americans had payed for. They now had lost money from the cargo they didn't receive and they also were a ship less. There were also Americans on board the ship. All those things pissed off the Americans and they entered the war after that.
