I recently got it up to 270 which is way TOO HOT. i discovered that the "Transmission cooler bypass valve"
was faulty and needed to be replaced. everything i have read says it should be 60-90 over ambient temp. But im really not sure

You are overheating the transmission. This will DESTROY it! You probably should add a transmission cooler.
The temperature gauge should be connected to the transmission temperature sensor. The transmission temperature sensor is located on the right-hand side of the transmission.
