What is the part of file name that helps the computer know what program to use to open a file?

It doesn't use any part of the file. It gets the extension (the part after the dot) of the file name, and looks that up in the registry to see what program should be used to open, for example, a .doc file.

When you double click on a word document Word opens How does the computer know how to do this?

The computer looks at the file extension and based on the set up uses the appropriate program to open the file. In this case the extension is .doc or .docx, so it uses Word. If it doesn't know what program it should use, it will ask you to select the appropriate program. It will also give you the option to make that the default next time it sees that extension.

WMM (Windows Movie Maker) should let you import .wav files since it is a file name extension (format) used by the program:aif, .aifc, .aiff, .asf, .au, .mp2, .mp3, .mpa, .snd, .wav, and .wmaMake sure the file is actually a .wav file. How do you make kmplayer your default media player?

Open Windows Media Player. At the top, on the left hand side there should be a horizontal list of options: File, View, Play, Tools and Help. Click on Tools. This will open a little menu. Go down and click on Options. This will pull up a new window with a bunch of tabs. Click on File Types. This window lets you choose what you would like to use Windows Media Player as the default player for. Select the types of files you want to use Windows Media to be the default player on. Click Apply and then click OK and you're done. Windows Media Player is now your default media player.

How do you stop viruses on your computer?

You should always have an anti-virus and anti-malware program running when you are connected to the internet. Windows Firewall is only designed to prevent unauthorized access from a network, not for general protection from harmful programs. There are numerous commercial antivirus programs (Norton, MacAfee), several of which may be suggested when you first begin using your computer. The default Windows security program is Windows Defender, but there is a separate program, Microsoft Security Essentials, that has a slightly broader range of coverage.
