lnk files aren't opened by any program. They are processed by windows to open another program or file. They are shortcut files. They don't need a default program
It doesn't use any part of the file. It gets the extension (the part after the dot) of the file name, and looks that up in the registry to see what program should be used to open, for example, a .doc file.
The computer looks at the file extension and based on the set up uses the appropriate program to open the file. In this case the extension is .doc or .docx, so it uses Word. If it doesn't know what program it should use, it will ask you to select the appropriate program. It will also give you the option to make that the default next time it sees that extension.
make sure the extension of the executable program you are trying to run has its extension set as .exe... to do that first go to folder options from windows explorer and make sure the option 'show filename extensions' is selected. then right click on the program file you are attempting to run..click on rename and type in the extension .exe...try running the program again, this time it should work

WMM (Windows Movie Maker) should let you import .wav files since it is a file name extension (format) used by the program:aif, .aifc, .aiff, .asf, .au, .mp2, .mp3, .mpa, .snd, .wav, and .wmaMake sure the file is actually a .wav file. Right-click the audio file and choose Properties from the drop-down menu. Note the extension and program currently opening the file type by default.
Open Windows Media Player. At the top, on the left hand side there should be a horizontal list of options: File, View, Play, Tools and Help. Click on Tools. This will open a little menu. Go down and click on Options. This will pull up a new window with a bunch of tabs. Click on File Types.
