WMM (Windows Movie Maker) should let you import .wav files since it is a file name extension (format) used by the program:
aif, .aifc, .aiff, .asf, .au, .mp2, .mp3, .mpa, .snd, .wav, and .wma
Make sure the file is actually a .wav file. Right-click the audio file and choose Properties from the drop-down menu. Note the extension and program currently opening the file type by default.

you can use lots of video editing softwares out there, it doesn't matter what type of camera you have or software you use, i prefer: pinnacle, movie maker, or video wave. If you have a win xp, movie maker should already be on there.

It means that you have hardware problems. If more precisely windows cannot properly recognized the audio card. There are at least two reasons for that. The first one is drivers. Make sure that you have correct version if required reinstall. The second reason is hardware which is more complicated and might require extra effort from you. Make sure that the card was installed properly.But you have sound and you are able to listen music and watch movie with sound than the problem is the movie maker. Check its settings, especially audio/sound settings.
