If your employer told you that you were being laid off, that usually means the company does not have enough work for you. It means you have lost your job through no fault of your own. In the United States and many other countries, you then go to the state employment office and sign up. You may be eligible to get money for almost 9 months, or until you get a job.

If you had health insurance, you may also be able to continue that for 18 months. Nothing is automatic.

Try contacting your local labor board, they should have that best answer for you! I think there should be severence pay or dismissal pay if you have been with the company for a qualifying length of time and you were laid off without proper notice. I am battling this myself right now. I was laid offf with only a two hour notice! Good luck to all!

File for Unemployment compensation and if your company has a policy on severence pay or dismissal pay then request it....However not all companies have a policy for severence pay or dismissal pay...Check with your dept of labor about the state laws on giving notice of unemployment..the vast majority of states do not require an employer to give you prior notice of unemployment...

File for unemployment, register at the Job Service and start looking for a new job. Repeat the process you did to get the job you were just laid off of.
