Computer technicians can find themselves dealing with many issues, some being hardware related, some being software related, and the rest being attributed to drunk Microsoft engineers collaborating with Apple-loving Microsoft programmers. Technicians will find themselves opening up the case on a PC quite a bit, so intimate knowledge of the differing standards and especially the different plugs is a must. Trends in technology is also important, as it isn't enough to know that a hard drive can connect with an EIDE cable and to know what a EIDE hard drive cable and plug look like if you don't know that most motherboards and hard drives available for purchase or shipping with pre-built systems have stopped using EIDE and have moved to SATA connections. When building a machine, mismatching technologies (ordering an EIDE harddrive and a SATA motherboard for instance) will cause a lot of headache, and can damage sensative internal parts. It is also important for a technician to be able to build a computer from parts, and take it apart again with confidence. While a lot of technology is plug and play these days.. meaning Tab A goes into similar looking Slot B, understanding the flow of the computer, and what a computer should sound like when it is starting and what it shouldn't, will help a technician figure out what is wrong when problems arise. Even a technician who can assemble and build the latest and greatest water-cooled super gaming rig won't be able to stand up to the rigors of the job. Software plays as large a part in a technicians job as the hardware... so understanding how software is installed as well as how it functions (or doesn't) is imperative. Being able to troubleshoot common software such as operating systems and the office suite will continue to be important long after all the computers are built.
