Careers in Cardiography: A Brief Review?

Cardiovascular technicians (a.k.a. technologists) assist cardiologists and other medical doctors by performing and analyzing diagnostic tests involving the heart and blood vessels. They also care for and maintain diagnostic equipment such as electrocardiographic devices and ultrasound machinery. In some cases, cardiovascular technicians must also monitor a patient's heart rate, blood pressure and cerebral blood flow during invasive surgical procedures. Job Description at a Glance According to the most recent projections by the U.S. Department of Labor, career opportunities in this medical field will expand at a much faster pace than average rate across the country. So, those interested in these careers should enroll in an accredited two or four-year degree program either at a junior or community college. And upon graduation, the vast majority of employers will require an additional certification before hiring. As a certified cardiovascular technician and technologist (a.k.a. cardio tech), you will be responsible for understanding and explaining complex diagnostic procedures to patients and performing these procedures safely as well. Cardiovascular diagnostic procedures include echocardiograms, Doppler ultrasounds, and electrocardiograms (EKGs) to name a few. You may also be expected to assist physicians with invasive procedures such as cardiac catheterizations. Invasive and Non-invasive Cardio Techs There are two basic categories of cardio tech work: invasive and non-invasive. As mentioned above, invasive cardio techs must familiarize themselves with invasive cardiovascular procedures like balloon angioplasty and have knowledge of the proper anesthesia to apply. Preparing patients for heart catheterization is also part of the work. Non-invasive cardio techs specialize in performing cardiovascular diagnostics like EKGs, procedures which do not require a physician's expertise to perform. Likewise, cardio techs can also perform vascular sonograms, which analyze a patient's pulse rate and vascular blood flow among other indications. Expected Compensation Credentialed cardio techs earn an average annual income of about $48,000. But the top 10% of cardio techs earn upwards of $70,000 a year. Depending on the setting of the work (i.e. in a hospital or private facility), entry-level cardio techs in a hospital setting can expect to make around $30,000 - $35,000 a year starting out. The upper-echelon of experienced cardio techs bring home upwards of $60,000 working in private practice facilities.
