If you see brands like Western Digital, Maxtor or those kinds of names for the hard drive, and AMD or Intel for the processor, and NVIDIA, ATI for the graphics card, etc... in general you're getting a decent PC. I will withhold the store and the brand of PC that I was going to purchase, but I was about to pay $600 for a PC that had a hard drive with its entire label in Chinese--not good. No name brand, certifications or anything. Scary! There was a Core2 processor without a fan, just a small heatsink! From newegg.com, I can build a PC with 1 GB ram, a 2.2GHz AMD64 processor, a DVD burner and a 250 GB hard drive for about $190. Consider building. Power supplies: the manufacturers see this as an opportunity to get cheap because there really isn't a name for them like for processors (Intel) and hard drives (Maxtor) and so on. Cheap power supplies = early death for PCs, esp. if you live where lightning frequents or you use your vacuum a/c and washer a lot.'

Ask yourself: Who will be using the computer? What will each of those people be using the computer for? How often will you be using the computer? What kind of budget do you have to buy a computer and what is your ideal amount to spend? Where will you put this computer in your home? IE: do you have enough space for a traditional desktop or do you want to consider other options like notebooks or all-in-ones? What accessories (like a printer or MP3 player) will you be connecting to or using with the computer? Once you answer these questions, you can consider what questions YOU need to be asking the sales people: What brand and model is the processor? How much file storage space does the system have? How many USB ports does the system have and where are they located (for attaching accessories)? Does the computer burn dvds or cds? How fast will this computer be? Will I need a better video card? (if you are gaming or watching movies) Will the computer work with the software and accessories I will be using?What kind of warranty does the computer come with and what does it cover?
