If someone is wheezing and cannot talk, begins to turn blue or is unable to breath, you should perform the Heimlich maneuver. If the person is able to cough, the are likely able to come out of it themselves.
If a person is able to breathe and cough, that person is not suffering from a full obstruction. In this case, you should refrain from doing the Heimlich maneuver and attempt to dislodge the object with your finger in the first instance. Ask the patient to try and cough it out, taking care not to dislodge it further into the trachea.
If this fails, deliver up to 6 back blows in between the shoulder blades (scapula). Should the patient start to deteriorate (collapse, cardiac arrest, stop breathing etc) deliver the Heimlich maneuver and commence cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
Provided it is available, a suction unit or similar medical device may be used to mechanically dislodge the obstruction.
DO NOT perform a tracheotomy unless you have been trained and it is clinically indicated and DO NOT attempt to use a vacuum cleaner to suck the object out of the patient's mouth.

When someone is choking!
If choking is due to allergic reaction or infection, people should summon emergency help or go immediately to an emergency room.
If a person is choking and has a serious obstruction in the airway call for an ambulance immediately. If a person is choking but still conscious: * Support the persons chest and lean them forwards (to allow gravity to help) and give five back slaps. * This should be done with the heel of your hand, between the shoulder blades and they should be sharp slaps in order to dislodge the piece of food/object they are choking on. * If the obstruction is not cleared after 5 back slaps, then give 5 abdominal thrusts. * This should be done by standing behind the person and placing a fist in the upper part of the abdomen (between the breastbone and the navel). Then hold your fist with the other hand. * Lean the choking person forward * Then pull sharply inwards and upwards * Repeat this five times * If the obstruction is still not cleared give 5 more back slaps and continue to alternate between backslaps and abdominal thrusts until obstruction is cleared or they become unconscious. If the person becomes unconscious at any time, gently lower them to the ground and commence CPR.
