If you smell the odorant that is added to natural gas and you are in a place where a natural gas leak might occur:

  • open the windows or otherwise increase ventilation
  • get to a safe place and call the gas supplier or fire department
~

Need to elaborate on the SAFE PLACE IMMEDIATELY. Maybe next door or down the street. Do not turn the lights on. Do not turn a phone on. Do not do anything to create a spark. Call 911. They will call the gas supplier and the fire department.

The action of opening a window....could create an issue of a breeze of spark rather than create ventilation.
Be aware of your gas appliances in your home. Know that they are well taken care of and in working order. I know this might be impossible when renting. I have never had to rely on someone else's word like that.
Always have a CO detector in your home as well as fire/smoke detector and fire extinguisher (although the last would be for something within your control).

When building onto our house, the electricians smelled gas when putting in the outside wiring. I live by a highway. A gas tanker had gone by, the spill off floated to the area. But all emergency were activated, they dug down to the natural gas pipe line, all was safe. That kind of gas is heavier, so it goes down rather than UP in the air. Heating fuel gas has the ODOR in it.
Don't take the time to figure it out yourself. In that time, you could be saving many lives.

Does natural gas has its own natural smell?

Actually no. Natural gas does not have a smell at all. A smell is added to it when its used for stoves and such.True Natural Gas does not have an odor, before or after combustion. The most common type of natural gas used is propane, in which they mix an additive to give it its tale-tell odor.yesPure natural gas (methane, CH4) is completely odorless. However, for domestic use, odorants are often added so that it is easier to detect a gas leak in your house. I'm not sure if the natural gas that comes out of the ground is pure or not, however, and there may be traces of other gases that do have a smell. The natural gas itself does not. However sour gas contains hydogen sulfide known as H2s and smells like rotten eggs. It is heavier than air and collects is low areas, which you smell when going through an oil field. A heavy dose can be deadly.

What does natural gas look like?

you cant really see natural gas just like you cant see wind or air but it there none the less. You can't see it, you can only smell it I think. natural gas is in a vapor form and isn't visible by the human eye. The only you can smell natural gas is because they add a sulfur scent to it for safety! Definitely do the "sniff test" if you're concerned about leaking natural gas!
