Honestly this is a personal decision, but you can go the middle rout like I did when that happened to me. I just placed all of the gifts that she gave me in a box and put it away in storage. That way it's not gone forever, but it's also not in your face reminding you of that person. It also depends on what it is. If it serves a practical purpose like a Swiss army knife or a nice jacket, then there's really no use in having it sit there. But like I said, ultimately it's up to you.
