Unless there have been warnings such as earthquakes, people usually have little warning of a massive eruption.

If you are near a volcano that erupts, you should probably:

  • Cover your mouth and nose before going outside because ash will fall; ash makes it almost impossible to breath and because the dust is pulverized rock, you won't want that entering your nose, mouth, and lungs
  • Cover your eyes with protective glasses if you have them or prescription glasses if you wear them--again to protect the eyes. If you wear contacts, remove them because dust will make it impossible to wear them.
  • If you live close to the volcano, OR if lava is flowing, OR if hot molten rocks are falling, you should quickly evacuate to a safer area.
  • Do not drive across the ash field-- it could clog the engine intake valves as well as permeating the car's interior. There can be high readings of non-breathable gases in the air.
  • If living below a hillside, leave. Explosions could trigger rock slides.
  • Do not simply stay in your house unless the authorities have said it is safe.

When a volcano is erupting, make sure that you have at least a mask and goggles on to prevent ash and other particles from entering your body. Prepare and bring along an emergency kit containing flashlights, a first aid kit, canned food and bottled water and a radio. Follow the instructions of the authorities most likely through the radio.

Evacuate if advised by the authorities, but avoid the volcano site, valleys and rivers that may carry debris. It is not advisable to stay in your house provided there is a basement or that the house can be totally sealed, as toxic gases can enter the house through gaps and the heavy ashfall may collapse the roof of the house. It is highly recommended to evacuate to higher ground as toxic gases and debris will fall and stay on lower ground, including mudflows.
