The first thing to do is to make a quick assessment of the situation. Find out if they are alive, if they are breathing on their own, if they are conscious, and so on. If they need CPR, give it to them, and if they are out, make sure their head is tilted so they won't aspirate their own vomit. Then you should try to find out what they took and then contact poison control or your area's emergency number. That could be 911, 999, operator, or whatever, depending on where you live in the world. You should then follow any instructions given by the doctor, emergency services, or poison control and wait for an ambulance. If you cannot do that for whatever reason (no phone service or living in a remote location with no address, or their condition is too dire to wait), then you need to get them to the hospital as soon as possible on your own.
Immediate medical attention is the preferred strategy these days. Home remedies to induce vomiting are in poor favor, and so is syrup of ipecac. You might not even be able to find syrup of ipecac these days since most manufacturers pulled the product. A major problem was that parents were giving small infants adult doses and possibly killing them. Syrup of ipecac is a poison itself in excessive doses. Also, syrup of ipecac can confuse the symptoms and make medical examination harder, since lethargy and vomiting are also symptoms of some of the various poisons. So it is hard to tell the effects of the remedy from the poison and confuses doctors.
