I was just diagnosed with MSk, and my doctor told me to eat a diet of mostly fruits and vegetables, and to limit my meat, but not eliminate it altogether. He said to make sure I eat plenty of dairy, even though calcium forms kidney stones. Some people mistakenly try to stop eating calcium in the mistaken notion that it will help not form stones, but my doctor said it has the opposite effect.

Can medullary sponge kidney cause bleeding or cramping in pregnancy?

Yes, medullary sponge kidney can indeed cause bleeding and cramping; however, being pregnant will not impact upon the symptoms. The bleeding is caused from small stones formed due to the condition if enough liquids are not drunk, and cramping from the recurrent infections associated with the condition. A sufficient amount of water, as well as regular checkups for kidney infection, can prevent these symptoms.

Does lemons help kidney stones?

On the contrary, highly acidic foods, such as citrus fruits, (i.e.: lemons, oranges, grapefruit), have been proven to be a trigger for the formation of kidney stones, as these substances heighten the levels of uric acid in the system. However, the herb "milk thistle" has been proven to break down kidney stones into a more passable "dust-like" form. I know this, because I have Medullary Sponge Kidney Disease. I have hundreds of them. A good source of milk thistle, as well as in encapsulized form, is in the energy drink, "Rockstar". I drink one each day, and the added taurine is also good for improved circulation. Be sure to only drink them in moderation, as with any food or drink that contain additive components.

How do you get kidney stones?

There are many reasons some people develop kidney stones. Medications can cause the development of some types of stones, as can some illnesses. The congenital condition medullary sponge kidney disease often results in stones formed so frequently that passing them is almost a daily occurrence. Most stones are the result of a metabolic imbalance. Sometimes the metabolic imbalance can be treated, sometimes it can't. A common way to treat patients for recurrent kidney stones is potassium citrate, which makes it less likely for certain stones to form inside the kidney. Some stones are the result of an imbalanced diet which may be easily altered without medication to help.Men are four times more likely to get kidney stones than women, and if you have previously had a kidney stone then you will have a 50 percent chance of developing another one within five years. Most people have no predisposing factors to explain why they develop kidney stones.
