The Confederate State of Alabama served the South in two main ways. Alabama was a good cropland area and helped the South with its food production and in cotton. It also had a seaport on the Gulf of Mexico. There in Mobile the port was home to ship building and it remained open longer than other ports for trade & commerce.
January 11, 1961 Alabama passed it's ordinance to seccede from the Union joining South Carolina and Mississippi who had succeded just days earlier. Alabama served as a Confederate state through out the Civil War.
