Well he did give up all luxuries and fine clothes! But he did not fully give up food and water.
Buddha was originally called Siddhartha Gautama.
In northern India, around 2,500 years ago, a young prince named Siddhartha Gautama lived a sheltered life of luxury. His parents kept him hidden from the world of human poverty and suffering. Siddhartha's parents believed he would be better off if he thought the world was a place free of sadness and pain. As a young man, Siddhartha ventured outside his home. He discovered a world he had not known to exist. Siddhartha saw death, illness, and grief. However, he also encountered a holy man, full of peace and self-assurance. At that moment, Siddhartha decided that he wanted to understand two things. Why did people suffer? Why was peace radiating from the holy man he had seen on the road? Siddhartha gave up his physical belongings and material wealth. He set out on a journey to find answers to his questions. Eventually, Siddhartha shared his philosophicaldiscoveries with other people. Siddhartha Gautama became known as the Buddha. His teachings form the foundation of the major world religion Buddhism.
siddhartha gautama believed that in order to stop reincarnation, you needed to reach a state in oyur life called nirvana. nirvana is when you give up all worldy desires to follow the ways of Buddhism through the eightfold path and the 4 noble truths. when nirvana is reached, it is sayed that one will not have to go through the suffering of life again. ya, i knew all that and im not Buddhist. im a 7th grader who just had a test on that. got a 99%. :) (missed a city on the map)

Siddhartha gave the religious reason of believing that extreme physical deprivation would help him attain spiritual enlightenment and transcendence from the cycle of rebirth. He thought that by renouncing worldly pleasures and practicing severe asceticism, he would achieve a higher state of spiritual awareness and understanding.
Prince Siddhartha, also known as Gautama Buddha spent a lot of his childhood time surrounded by the wealth of his father at several palaces. He was mostly raised by his mother's younger sister, Maha Pajapati. He started to develop some ideas too.
Siddhartha Gautama created Buddhism. He was a wealthy prince who was born around 563 BC. When he was traveling outside of the palace walls he saw many people who were ill, homeless and suffering. He invented Buddhism to teach people that to find the truth about the world they had to give up all desires.
