Our American Cousin was now in its third act. Mary sat very close to her husband, her hand in his. She whispered to him, "What will Miss Harris think of my hanging on to you so?" The president replied, "She won't think anything about it." It was between 10:15 P.M. and 10:30 P.M. On stage actor Harry Hawk was saying, "Don't know the manners of good society, eh? Well, I guess I know enough to turn you inside out, old gal - you sockdologizing old mantrap!" John Wilkes Booth came up behind Mr. Lincoln and shot him in the back of the head near point blank range.

John.W.Booth actually didn't plan to kill only Abe Lincoln, but also many more. He hated how the South lost the Civil War and wanted revenge. He wanted the central government to fall, so he planed attacks on major political figures, such as the President, Vice-President, and etc. He had a band of followers, but they were stupid. They all failed at their process, though one of them were a giant (Big-Fella) and injured his target. John.W.Booth was injured and killed later on.

Robert E. Lee had just surrendered the Confederate Army earlier that week. President Lincoln, humbled by the suffering he witnessed, had promissed no revenge against the South. It was Good Friday, and the President and his wife went to see the comedy Our American Cousin at the Fords Theater, where he was shot. Ironically, he had just created the Secret Service earlier that same day, although they did not take on the roll of protecting the President and his family until after William McKinley's assassination. He was taken to his home where he was nursed as he suffered through the night, and he died the next morning, April 15, 1865.

Who was the president duing the civil war?

For most of the war it was Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), who proclaimed that the conflict was ultimately intended to "preserve the union" of the United States. Actual hostilities began a month after his inauguration, on April 12, 1861. The major fighting in the War ended just 6 days before Lincoln was assassinated on April 15, 1865. Confederate forces under Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox, VA on April 9. The final shots of the war took place in June, 1865, after Vice President Andrew Johnson (1808-1875) succeeded to the Presidency on Lincoln's death. Jefferson Davis (1808-1889) was the President of the Confederate States of America from 1861 to 1865, leading the government of the South. Abraham Lincoln
