In 1981 in Poland, the government declared martial law in order to try to crush political opposition. Martial law was maintained from December 13, 1981 to July 22, 1983.
The Solidarity movement had accumulated broad support for ending the totalitarianism of Soviet-influenced in Poland. The Polish government at the time decided to keep in good favor with Moscow and use force to end the protests and public resistance. A general strike was organized in this year by Solidarity.
