On April 9, 1865, the commander of the Confederate forces, General Robert E. Lee, also the head of the Army of Northern Virginia, was surrounded by Union forces. He surrendered to US Grant, the head of all Union forces and Lieutenant General of the Army of the Potomac. The site chosen was the Appomattox Courthouse in Virginia. General Grant was a gracious victor and fed all the Confederate soldiers who needed food.

The Appomattox Courthouse happened to be the home of Wilmer McLean. In the early afternoon of April 9, Lee and Grant met. Lee was in full dress uniform and Grant, (this was his style no sign of disrespect ) was wearing a soiled and rumpled private's jacket reminisced about their service together in the Mexican War.

As part of the surrender agreement, Lee's men were allowed to return to their homes with their horses for Spring planting. They gave up their weapons in a honorable way to the North.

As an aside, and to remark about the supply advantages of the North, Grant ordered 25,000 rations for the Army of Northern Virginia.

Later in Grant's own words he expressed how sad this occasion was to him. To show how solemn event this was for Grant, his men began firing off a hundred gun salute to mark the surrender of Lee.

Grant had this stopped immediately and once again in Grant's words "we did not want to exalt over the downfall (of the Army of Northern Virginia )

As Lee mounted his horse Traveler, the Southern and Union soldiers lifted their caps. Lee with no hat road among the soldiers as a goodbye and his tears were shed. So too with his men.
