What size drill bit for 5-16 lag screw?

I use 1/4 drill bit for a 5/16 lag screw in most materials.

What size pilot hole for 516 lag screw?

You should use a bit that is just a little bit smaller, but only drill the depth about 2/3 of the distance. This will allow solid penetration into the undrilled wood. 5/16 lags = 3/16 or 1/4 pilot drill bit.

What size drill do you use for a five sixteenth inch dia lag screw?

It depends on the material you are fitting it into. In most wood I pre-drill a 1/4 hole for this. In softer woods i would drill a smaller hole .

Drill bit size for lag screws?

3/16 inch since you are using a screw and you want the threads to catch the wood if you meant lag bolt, make it 5/16 inch so the bolt will slide through

What is lag screw?

It's a screw that cuts its own threads, as opposed to a bolt requiring a bolt-hole to be tapped (a process that pre-cuts the threads). Lag screws are used in bone surgery where the screw anchors into the bone itself. This saves a multi-step procedure that a regular bolt would require, with no real downside.

How do you mount a pedestal sink?

The sink sits on the pedestal and there is a hole or slot on the bottom edge that rests against the wall. A large screw or lag screw is put through these holes and into the wall. There should be a 2x6 or wider board in the wall for this purpose in the original construction.

What is the best way to hang a heavy picture on a wall with no stud behind it?

If the wall is made of drywall/sheetrock/gypsum wallboard, use one or more screw anchors. This is a plastic cone that comes with a screw. You drill a hole, push in the plastic cone, and use a screw driver to thread the screw into the anchor. Typically the instructions are on the package of screw anchors. Larger anchors will hold more weight, but the size of screw anchor you can use is limited by the thickness of the drywall, so the thickness of the drywall limits the weight it will support. It might be possible to use multiple anchors, but that might require some calculation and planning. If the wall is not drywall but plaster and lathe, you can use a lag bolt. This is a long threaded rod with a spring-loaded folding wing-like thing that threads on the end. To use it you drill a hole large enough to accommodate the folded wing. Push it through the hole, and the wings expand and grip the inside of the wall. Turn the screw to pull it up tight. For a brick or stone wall, there are special masonry drill bits to drill a hole, and anchors of plastic or metal that go in the hole. These expand to grip the wall when a matching screw is driven in. If the wall is not too thick, you could use a lag bolt like above. For a wood wall, simple wood screws should work. For smooth tile or glass, consider any epoxy adhesive.

How do you install a hanger bolt?

Thread two nuts all the way onto the machine-threaded end and jam them tightly together. Then use a wrench to insert the lag-threaded end, after drilling a pilot hole. After the lag portion is inserted to the required depth, use the wrench (or possibly a pair of wrenches) to loosen and remove the nuts.

What wood drill bit size would I use for one quarter inch diameter lag screw into 2 pieces 1 AND HALF inch width wood board?

What is a coach screw?

I've heard of clutch screw, refers to the type of head, like straight or phillips. Possible carriage bolt, a flat or slightly rounded head bolt with a square shank under the head. A coach screw is a large screw with a hex head. Searching on the internet I find that "Lag bolts" are sometimes called "coach screws". We think that a "coach screw" is a lag bolt on one end and machine treads on the other, uses would be like attaching a bathroom sink to wood stud walls.
