A 16G shotgun is used for the same purposes as a 12 gage. It makes a smaller retort, and gentler kick, so it can be used as a lady's gun. But it needs to be pointed more accurately, and probably at closer range to provide reasonable kills.
Obviously, 16 gauge. However, they were amde in a couple of different lengths. Oldest used a 2 9/16ths inch long shell, later guns used a 2 3/4 inch shell. Have a gunsmith check the length. Dangerous to fire wrong shell.

it is not safe to fire 16 gauge shell in anything but a 16 gauge.No shells will interchange with other gauge guns since a 16 gauge shell would fit in a 12 gauge chamber, I would think you can do this.
