The British under General Henry Clinton were hampered in the evacution from Philadelphia to New York by high temperatures (over 100°F / 37° C), and by the destruction of bridges by the Americans in New Jersey. General George Washington did not attack the long British lines until June 28, at the Battle of Monmouth, and was mostly unsuccessful against the British rear guard.
