Not to belittle a well-known artist, because many, many people loved him and his music. But to be honest with you and to pointedly answer your question - I really don't know. Same answer if you asked about Marsalis.

Now, if you consider Richard Monreal in San Antonio, Texas, at the age of 17 he was playing the Trumpet like it was nobody's business. Talk about Andrew Sanchez who play the jazz solo at the Texas Regional Jazz Competition - made it smoke! And who doesn't know Charlie McBride and Arturo Gonzales (Sauce) in San Antonio? Trumpeter and organist, respectively. Now, these folks were special.

Maybe it's the time and era that Armstrong played. I can't get into it.
