Depends on the network. Say for a simple file sharing network. You dont need any special software. Just make sure you have your TCP/IP settings configured correctly, a userfriendly name on your PC, and then just check your firewall settings. Ready to start sharing.
But if you want to set 2 folders to sync over a network (or the internet) you will need software.
If you want printer sharing, you will find most (non-technical) people will use software to do all the configs for them, whereas a techie would just stick in the printer IP, or the name of the computer its attached to - whatever the case may be.
