Depends on the network. Say for a simple file sharing network. You dont need any special software. Just make sure you have your TCP/IP settings configured correctly, a userfriendly name on your PC, and then just check your firewall settings. Ready to start sharing.
But if you want to set 2 folders to sync over a network (or the internet) you will need software.
If you want printer sharing, you will find most (non-technical) people will use software to do all the configs for them, whereas a techie would just stick in the printer IP, or the name of the computer its attached to - whatever the case may be.
You will have to be more specific as to what network your talking about (wired, wireless) and what this network is doing (file sharing, printer sharing) is there a server, if so what OS is it...
